Interactive Careers Day at Rockingham Motor Speedway
On Wednesday 12 October 2011, Rockingham Motor Speedway in Corby, Northamptonshire opened its doors to 600 young people from across the region to enable them to experience for themselves the wide variety of career opportunities within the engineering and automotive industries.
At Sir Jonathan North, we believe that it is very important to expose our students to Maths, Science, Engineering and Design Technology outside the classroom and were pleased to offer the opportunity to attend this event to 50 Year 9 students.
With 42 organisations promoting their particular interests, our students were spoiled for choice with the many activities on offer. These included; go-carts; 6-seater bikes; diggers; HGV trucks; high speed police cars; an AA driving experience; motorbike tests and many interesting presentations from industry professionals.
We were also able to attend two workshops. “Closing the Gender Gap” looked at gender roles within the automotive and engineering industry and female professionals were on hand to speak to our students and answer their questions. The second workshop, “The Road to Formula One” focused on how anything was possible with commitment and the determination to succeed.
We were impressed with the level of understanding, enthusiasm and maturity shown by the students. This was a busy, interesting and inspirational day that we hope will become an annual event in the future.
