Health and Social Care Students demonstrate their skills!

The Health and Social Care Team would like to take this opportunity to thank our Year 11 GCSE and student volunteers for their help and support during Open Evening Sept 22 2011.

Prospective students were invited to participate at our interactive work stations within the Health and Social Care Team.

Station 1 The Health Zone saw a chance for prospective students to take their parent’s or carer’s blood pressure under the expert guidance of our students. The opportunity to apply a bandage and sling was also received with great enthusiasm!

Station 2 The Social Care Zone: here participants could experience the ageing process. Goggles to simulate loss of vision were worn and an imaginary trip to the shops undertaken .The task to find 57p from a little purse whilst wearing the goggles could at times be impossible. The memory test was equally popular with visitors and staff!

Station 3 Our Healthy Eating Zone . Visitors were asked if they ate at McDonalds restaurants. If so they were asked to select items from the menu. Students then analysed the fat, sugar and salt content of their chosen meal and were able to show visitors the exact amounts of these visually, thanks to the support we received in borrowing our Science Faculty’s amazing resources. Students were then able to suggest healthier menu choices. Many visitors were horrified to discover the amount of fat in their meal!

With queues at each station the event was a great success and our students were amazing in demonstrating their professionalism and knowledge. The students were Sumaiyya Adam, Faaizah Patel, Zaynah Sheikh, Shanice Simon, Leah Deazle, Manjula Modhwadia, Akeela Ibrahim, Ubaah Abdi, Letitia Hope, Gemma Thompson.
