SJNCC Summer School - The Arts 2011

On Monday 18 July 94 Students from academic Years 5 to 11, from the Saffron Lane, Eyres Monsell, Aylestone and Knighton areas came together here at Sir Jonathan North to put together a show for an audience to include dance, drama, music, art, djing, photography and illustration – they had only three days to choreograph, write, create and produce!

The atmosphere this year was infectious; lots of talent, creativity and ideas buzzing around. Everybody knew there was a lot of work to be done to put together a work share they could be proud of.

We had seven specialist areas all producing very different elements to the show but all working from the same stimulus. The theme this year was ‘Cross the Line,’ the idea being that we make a choice with our achievements. On one side of the line are our dream goals and we put here the people we most admire; the best achievements are this side of the line. On the other side of the line are things we stumble across and things that do not mean very much to us and do not excite us or require as much effort. So we make the choice – which side of the line do you want to be? This was a fantastic theme for Summer School and created a wonderful link for the final piece.

We also had a very proactive media team led by previous Sir Jonathan North student Rosie Cleere. The team of three was very busy interviewing students from all areas, capturing special moments and recording their work in progress. In order to be greener, instead of our usual newsletters which we provide for all students at the end of Summer School, the media team has put together a fantastic online account which includes write-ups, videos, interviews, photos’, students work and much more! Please visit http://sjnccsummer2011.tumblr.com. Photos are still being added to the site so keep checking back!

On the third and final day, parents, family and friends were invited to attend the show to see their child’s work. All the Summer School specialist areas came together in the Drama studio to perform and share their achievements with everybody. The video of the work share will be added to the website next week, so please view the final performance on Friday 16 September!

The atmosphere throughout the show was fantastic and everyone went home still singing the Music team’s Cross the Line song, which they had written and produced themselves. Even though everybody was exhausted from three days of hard work, it was sad to know Summer School was over…until next year!

A huge thank you to all the staff, peer tutors, the media team and students who made this event a huge success!
